UAE Performs First Robotic Thyroid Surgery, Patient Discharged the Next Day
The UAE has reached a significant healthcare milestone after doctors at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) in Abu Dhabi performed the country's first robotic thyroid surgery.
The procedure was carried out on a 27-year-old woman who was discharged from hospital the following day.
The operation introduces another treatment option for suitable patients who require thyroid surgery.
Unlike conventional procedures that usually leave an incision at the front of the neck, this technique allows surgeons to access the thyroid through small incisions in the armpits.
Patient Underwent Surgery After Thyroid Nodule Diagnosis
The patient, identified as Caroline, sought medical attention after experiencing swelling in her neck, difficulty swallowing and a choking sensation while sleeping.
Medical examinations revealed a 3-centimetre nodule with abnormal features in the left side of her thyroid gland.
Following a detailed assessment, doctors recommended surgery and determined that a robotic approach was suitable for her condition.
A multidisciplinary team of surgeons, an anaesthetist and nurses carried out the procedure, which took approximately one hour to complete.
How Robotic Thyroid Surgery Works
The technique allows surgeons to reach the thyroid gland through small incisions in the armpits rather than making a visible cut on the neck.
The robotic system provides a magnified, three-dimensional view of the operating area, helping doctors perform precise movements around delicate structures, including nerves and glands.
For appropriately selected patients, this approach can avoid a visible neck scar and may reduce neck discomfort after surgery.
However, suitability depends on an individual's medical condition, and conventional surgery remains an option when clinically appropriate.
Abu Dhabi Expands Its Advanced Surgical Capabilities
The achievement builds on SSMC's robotic surgery programme, which began in 2020.
The hospital has since performed more than 1,380 robotic-assisted procedures across multiple medical specialities.
Doctors have highlighted the importance of careful patient selection when deciding whether robotic thyroid surgery is appropriate.
The introduction of this technique gives eligible patients access to another specialised treatment option within the UAE, potentially reducing the need to travel abroad for certain procedures.
The milestone also reflects the country's continued investment in advanced medical technology and specialised healthcare services.
