Online insults in UAE can land you in jail, cost up to Dh500,000 fine
The UAE has warned social media users that insulting or defaming others online can lead to imprisonment and fines of up to Dh500,000. The warning is part of a nationwide campaign aimed at promoting responsible digital behaviour and raising awareness about cybercrime laws.
The campaign, titled The UAE Is Safe with Your Digital Awareness, is being organised by the UAE Ministry of Interior in cooperation with Dubai Police and the Dubai Electronic Security Centre (DESC). It is running throughout October as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
Authorities are reminding residents that online comments, posts and other digital communications must comply with the country's laws.
What Does UAE Law Say About Online Defamation?
The campaign highlights Article 43 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes, which outlines penalties for online insults and defamation.
Under the law, anyone who insults another person or attributes an incident to them that could expose them to punishment or public contempt through an information network or information technology system may face:
Imprisonment.
A fine ranging from Dh250,000 to Dh500,000.
Both imprisonment and a fine.
The penalties can be more severe when the offence targets a public official who is performing official duties.
The warning serves as a reminder that social media users can be held legally accountable for content they publish or share online.
UAE Campaign Encourages Respectful Online Communication
Beyond highlighting legal consequences, the campaign encourages people to use social media for constructive discussions and the respectful exchange of opinions.
Authorities are urging users to avoid personal attacks, insulting comments and online mockery. Instead, they are promoting positive dialogue and responsible communication that reflects the UAE's social values.
The initiative aims to remind residents that freedom of expression on digital platforms should be exercised responsibly and without harming others.
Broader UAE Drive to Improve Digital Safety
The UAE Is Safe with Your Digital Awareness is part of a wider public education initiative covering various digital threats, including cybercrime, online fraud and the misuse of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.
The campaign seeks to improve digital literacy and encourage safer online practices among all sections of society.
Running throughout October, the initiative forms part of the UAE's annual Cybersecurity Awareness Month activities, reinforcing the importance of digital awareness and responsible online conduct.
What Social Media Users Should Remember
UAE residents are encouraged to think carefully before publishing comments, sharing allegations or posting content about other people online. Understanding the country's cybercrime laws and communicating respectfully can help users avoid legal problems while contributing to a safer digital environment.
