Why Is Long-Grain Rice So Dominant?
Several factors help explain the global dominance of Indica and other long-grain varieties.
They are grown extensively across some of the world's biggest rice-producing regions and are used in an enormous range of cuisines.
Long-grain rice also travels well through international supply chains and suits everything from simple steamed rice to curries, biryani and commercial food production.
USDA estimates show that Indica alone represents roughly two-thirds of global rice trade.
Basmati vs Jasmine Rice: What Is the Difference?
Although both are aromatic long-grain varieties, they are noticeably different.
Basmati generally has very long grains that become even longer when cooked. It tends to remain fluffy and separate and is strongly associated with Indian, Pakistani and Middle Eastern cuisine.
Jasmine rice is softer and slightly stickier, with a floral aroma closely associated with Thai and Southeast Asian cooking.
Neither is inherently “better.” The right choice depends largely on the dish.
For biryani or pulao, Basmati is often preferred. For Thai curry or stir-fry, Jasmine rice is usually the more traditional option.
