Tibet Earthquake: At Least 16 Dead After Powerful 7.0-Magnitude Quake

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 in magnitude struck China's Tibet region late on Thursday, October 22, killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens more, according to official reports.

The tremor hit the northern city of Nagqu, where hundreds of homes were reported collapsed or damaged.

Emergency teams have been deployed to the affected areas as authorities assess the scale of the destruction.

Rescue and relief operations are continuing, with efforts focused on reaching injured residents and providing assistance to people whose homes have been damaged.

Hundreds of Homes Damaged in Nagqu

The earthquake struck at approximately 10:33 pm local time in a remote, high-altitude area of northern Tibet.

Officials reported that at least 339 homes had collapsed or sustained damage, while several livestock shelters were also affected.

The shallow tremor caused residents to rush outdoors as buildings shook and objects fell inside shops and homes.

The epicentre was located northeast of Nagqu and several hundred kilometres from the regional capital, Lhasa.

Authorities continue to inspect buildings and evaluate the damage.

Rescue Teams Mobilised as Services Face Disruption

Police, firefighters and other emergency personnel have been sent to the earthquake zone to search damaged structures and assist affected families.

Communications have been disrupted in parts of the region, while railway services were suspended as a precaution.

Rockfalls also prompted restrictions on a section of National Highway 317, allowing emergency and rescue vehicles to pass.

Authorities have arranged temporary accommodation and essential supplies for displaced residents.

Officials are monitoring conditions as rescue operations continue in the remote mountainous area.

Authorities Continue Emergency Relief Efforts

The earthquake has prompted an emergency response as officials work to determine the full extent of casualties and property losses.

Medical teams are treating injured residents, including people reported to be in serious condition.

Rescue workers are also helping families move to safer locations and providing temporary shelter, bedding and winter clothing.

The region's high elevation and difficult terrain could complicate relief efforts, while colder weather may create additional challenges.

Authorities are urging residents to follow official safety instructions as assessments and recovery operations continue.
