Sharjah unveils new Al Taawun Square design, set to open to traffic on November 4

Sharjah authorities have revealed the new design for Al Taawun Square, announcing that the junction will open to traffic on November 4, coinciding with the opening of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2026).

The announcement was made during the Direct Line programme, where officials presented an image showing the planned appearance of the redesigned square, which features traffic-light-controlled intersections.

Al Taawun Square to Open During Sharjah Book Fair

Authorities confirmed that motorists will be able to use Al Taawun Square during the book fair. The opening is expected to make travel easier for visitors heading to Expo Centre Sharjah, where the event will take place.

The timing is particularly important as thousands of residents and visitors are expected to travel to the exhibition venue during the event.

Al Taawun Tunnel Project Aims to Reduce Traffic Congestion

The announcement comes as construction continues on the Al Taawun Tunnel project, which forms part of Sharjah's wider infrastructure improvement plans.

The tunnel is being developed to address congestion at one of the busiest bottlenecks along the Sharjah-Dubai corridor. According to earlier project information, it could reduce motorists' waiting times by up to 85 per cent.

Tunnel Project to Be Completed by February 2027

The first phase of the Al Taawun Tunnel project is scheduled to open in November 2026. The wider development is expected to be fully completed by February 2027.

Once completed, the project is expected to improve traffic movement, reduce delays and strengthen road connectivity in Al Taawun, one of Sharjah's busiest areas.

The opening of Al Taawun Square ahead of the book fair will provide an initial improvement for motorists while the larger infrastructure project continues.
