From Gym Cleaner to Law Graduate: Dubai Student’s Inspiring Journey
A young Filipino student has turned financial hardship into an inspiring academic achievement in Dubai.
Ana Kristine Elayda, who once worked as a gym cleaner to afford a phone for online classes during the Covid-19 pandemic, has graduated with first-class honours in law.
Her journey reflects years of dedication, hard work and determination to build a better future.
From balancing schoolwork with jobs to pursuing a professional legal career, her story highlights how perseverance and the right support can open doors to new opportunities.
From Financial Challenges to University Success
Elayda grew up in the Philippines in a family that faced financial difficulties.
Alongside completing her schoolwork, she tutored other students and worked at a gym to help meet her educational needs.
Her academic performance stood out, and she completed senior high school in 2022 with an average of 97 out of 100 in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics stream.
At 19, she moved to Dubai to pursue her ambitions, supported by family members and opportunities that helped her continue her education.
How Dubai Helped Her Pursue a Legal Career
Her move to Dubai brought an opportunity to study law at Middlesex University Dubai, where she received a 30 per cent scholarship.
Italian lawyer Antonio Maria Varvaro also supported her legal education and provided an opportunity to gain professional experience at his law firm.
Working as a legal assistant and paralegal allowed her to learn about contract reviews, client matters and everyday legal operations while continuing her degree.
Managing university studies alongside work was demanding, but the experience helped her understand how legal principles apply beyond the classroom.
Preparing for the Next Chapter
Having graduated with first-class honours, Elayda is now preparing for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination as she works towards her professional goals.
She has also completed internships related to international trade and arbitration and earned additional certifications in areas connected to legal practice.
Looking ahead, she hopes to establish her career in the UAE and eventually help other students access opportunities similar to those that supported her journey.
Her experience highlights the importance of education, mentorship, family support and determination in overcoming financial challenges and pursuing long-term ambitions.
