UAE Mystery Smell Explained: Oil Spill Confirmed Near Umm Al Quwain
Unusual smells reported across several parts of the UAE earlier this week have been linked to an oil spill from a tanker affecting the coastline of Umm Al Quwain.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed the discovery on October 23, 2026, after monitoring and environmental assessments.
Authorities have temporarily closed all beaches and coastal areas in the emirate as a precaution.
Response teams are working to contain the pollution and limit damage to the marine environment.
Officials have also reassured residents that the reported odours do not pose a health risk.
How the Mystery Odour Investigation Began
Reports of unusual, fuel-like smells emerged on October 19, with residents in Sharjah and other emirates raising concerns.
Authorities began inspections and coordinated monitoring to identify the source and assess any potential risks.
Sharjah Police initially said the situation was stable and that there was no indication of a threat to public safety.
Federal environmental officials continued their investigations over the following days.
The tanker oil spill was subsequently confirmed as the cause linked to odours reported in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain.
Umm Al Quwain Beaches Closed as Cleanup Begins
Following the discovery, specialist teams started containment, cordoning, cleanup and remediation work in coordination with local and federal authorities.
Coastal surveys and environmental assessments are being carried out to determine the extent of the pollution and identify measures to protect marine life.
All beaches and coastal areas in Umm Al Quwain will remain temporarily closed until technical teams complete their assessments and establish the necessary safety measures.
Authorities have not announced a reopening date. Fishermen and other sea users have been urged to avoid affected areas and follow official instructions.
What UAE Residents Should Know
The environment ministry has stated that the unusual odours reported across the affected emirates pose no health risks to residents.
However, precautionary measures remain in place while cleanup operations and environmental monitoring continue.
Residents and visitors should stay away from closed beaches and avoid contact with any oil or suspected pollution along the shoreline.
People are also encouraged to follow official government announcements and avoid sharing unverified claims.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as assessments progress and additional information becomes available.
