UAE Flag Day 2026: History, meaning of colours and rules for displaying the flag
The UAE celebrates Flag Day every year on November 3, an occasion that reflects the country's unity, national identity and pride.
Ahead of this year's celebrations, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has called on citizens, residents, government institutions, schools, universities and households to raise the UAE flag on November 3.
Sheikh Mohammed encouraged people across all seven emirates to participate in the occasion, describing it as a symbol of love, pride and loyalty to the homeland.
But why is UAE Flag Day celebrated on November 3? What do the four colours of the national flag represent, and what rules should residents follow when displaying it? Here is everything you need to know.
What Is UAE Flag Day and Why Is It Celebrated on November 3?
UAE Flag Day was first celebrated in 2013 to commemorate the anniversary of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan's accession as UAE President in 2004.
Since then, the occasion has become an important annual event, bringing together Emiratis and expatriates to express national pride and unity ahead of the country's Eid Al Etihad celebrations in December.
Government institutions, schools, universities and workplaces typically mark the day with flag-raising ceremonies and other activities.
UAE Flag Day is not a public holiday, so residents should not expect an automatic day off from work or school.
History of the UAE National Flag
The UAE national flag was first raised on December 2, 1971, by the country's Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, during celebrations marking the establishment of the Union.
The flag was designed by Abdullah Al Maeena, who won a national competition organised by Al-Ittihad newspaper in 1971.
Its four colours — red, green, white and black — were inspired by a verse from a poem by Safi al-Din al-Hilli:
“White are our acts, green our fields, black our battles, and red our swords.”
Each colour carries a symbolic meaning associated with the nation's values and heritage.
What Do the Four Colours of the UAE Flag Represent?
The UAE flag features four colours, each representing a different value.
Red: Represents courage and sacrifice.
Green: Symbolises prosperity and growth.
White: Stands for peace and honesty.
Black: Signifies strength and determination.
Together, the colours reflect the values, unity and national identity of the UAE.
UAE Flag Day Rules: How to Display the National Flag
Residents, schools, businesses and government institutions are encouraged to display the UAE flag respectfully. The UAE Flag Guidelines issued by the UAE Cabinet outline important practices for handling and maintaining the national symbol.
Here are seven important rules to follow.
1. Keep the Flag Clean and Presentable
The flag should remain clean, neat and in good condition whenever it is displayed. Residents should ensure it is properly maintained.
2. Replace Damaged Flags
Torn, faded or discoloured flags should be replaced to maintain their appearance and ensure they are displayed respectfully.
3. Inspect the Flag Before Raising It
Before hoisting the flag, check that it is not damaged, tangled or improperly attached to the flagpole.
4. Check the Flag After Bad Weather
Strong winds, rain and other harsh weather conditions can damage flags. Inspect the flag after severe weather and replace it if necessary.
5. Dispose of Worn-Out Flags Respectfully
Old or damaged flags should be handled and disposed of according to official guidelines. The UAE guidelines prohibit burning flags for environmental reasons and specify respectful methods for disposing of flags that can no longer be used.
6. Never Insult or Deliberately Damage the Flag
Deliberately damaging or insulting the national flag can carry legal consequences. Article 3 of Federal Decree-Law No. 13 of 2019 addresses offences involving insults to the UAE flag.
7. Fold and Store the Flag Properly
When the flag is not being displayed, fold it neatly and keep it in a designated flag box or another suitable storage place to protect it from damage.
How Residents Can Participate in UAE Flag Day 2026
Residents can take part in the November 3 celebrations by raising the national flag at their homes, workplaces, schools and other appropriate locations.
Schools and institutions may organise flag-raising ceremonies, while families can use the occasion to teach children about the UAE's history, national symbols and founding values.
As the country prepares to mark UAE Flag Day 2026, the occasion offers an opportunity for citizens and residents to celebrate the unity, heritage and shared identity that bring the seven emirates together.
