UAE Announces $3 Million Funding for New Rain Enhancement Research Projects

UAE Introduces New Rain Enhancement Research Programme

The UAE has announced a new funding initiative worth US$3 million (approximately Dh11 million) to support research into advanced rain enhancement technologies.

The initiative is part of the seventh cycle of the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science (UAEREP), managed by the National Centre of Meteorology.

The programme aims to encourage scientific innovation and develop new approaches to increasing rainfall, particularly in dry and water-scarce regions.

Funding will support up to five research projects, with each project running for one to three years.

The initiative reflects the country's continued efforts to strengthen water security through scientific research.

Five Research Areas to Receive Special Attention

The latest research cycle will focus on five major areas, including improved cloud-seeding materials, innovative rain enhancement systems and autonomous unmanned aircraft.

Researchers will also explore limited-area climate interventions and advanced models, software and data technologies.

Artificial intelligence and improved weather prediction methods are expected to play an important role in developing more effective research solutions.

The projects will examine ways to improve cloud formation, precipitation processes and the evaluation of rainfall enhancement results.

These research priorities are designed to move scientific developments closer to practical applications.

Funding Opportunities for International Researchers

The programme will offer different funding levels depending on project duration.

One-year research projects can receive up to US$500,000, while two-year projects may qualify for up to US$1 million.

Three-year projects can receive funding of up to US$1.5 million.

Applications will undergo a two-stage evaluation process covering scientific quality, innovation, research methods, team expertise and budget planning.

The programme is also encouraging partnerships between universities, government institutions and private-sector organisations, with international research collaboration welcomed.

UAE Strengthens Long-Term Water Security Goals

The seventh cycle builds on the achievements of 17 research projects supported during the programme's previous six cycles.

The broader objective is to develop scientifically tested technologies that can contribute to rainfall enhancement and address water scarcity.

The UAE is also encouraging greater knowledge sharing, international cooperation and research opportunities for local scientific institutions.

By investing in advanced weather research and innovative technologies, the country aims to strengthen its long-term water security strategy.

The latest initiative highlights the growing importance of scientific innovation in addressing environmental and climate-related challenges.
