Dubai's Museum of the Future reopens in 2027: What visitors can expect
When Dubai’s Museum of the Future reopens in the first quarter of 2027, the building may look familiar from the outside, but visitors can expect an entirely new experience inside.
The museum will introduce fresh exhibitions, immersive environments and new laboratories, replacing the experiences that have defined it since its opening in 2022. The renewed attraction aims to give visitors a more hands-on role in exploring science, research and future possibilities.
Azza Al Nuaimi, Chief Operating Officer of the Museum of the Future, that the renewed experience will have its own focus and direction rather than simply updating the existing galleries.
According to the museum’s website FAQs, none of the current exhibitions or experiences will return in their previous form. Instead, visitors will explore new attractions connected through a different narrative and visitor journey.
“The aim is to make the future something visitors can do more than simply imagine,” Al Nuaimi said.
New Exhibitions, Immersive Environments and Laboratories
The redesigned museum will encourage visitors to explore emerging possibilities, engage with research taking place inside its laboratories and understand how decisions made today could influence tomorrow’s world.
The transformation will also involve changes to the team responsible for delivering the visitor experience.
The museum’s new Future Perfects recruitment campaign attracted more than 20,000 completed applications within its first 48 hours. The initiative focuses on qualities such as curiosity, imagination, emotional intelligence and adaptability rather than requiring previous museum or customer-service experience.
The museum is expected to reopen around its fifth anniversary. It first opened on February 22, 2022, although officials have not announced an exact reopening date for 2027.
According to the museum’s FAQs, tickets for the renewed experience will become available closer to the reopening date.
What Will Happen to the Current Exhibitions?
For almost five years, visitors have explored several experiences that introduced different aspects of science, technology and the future.
These included OSS Hope, which took visitors into an imagined world in 2071, the Heal Institute, Al Waha, Tomorrow Today and Future Heroes, which catered to younger visitors.
However, these experiences will make way for the museum’s new attractions.
“The existing exhibitions will be taken down to make way for the new experiences,” Al Nuaimi said.
The museum has not yet confirmed what will happen to individual exhibits. Decisions will depend on their nature, condition and potential for future use.
Some elements may be preserved, relocated or reused, while others could be retired. Officials have not confirmed which exhibits will be retained or where they might go.
Why Is the Museum of the Future Changing?
Since the museum opened in 2022, fields such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology and space exploration have advanced rapidly.
These developments have introduced new possibilities and raised questions about how scientific progress and emerging technologies could influence society and everyday life.
Al Nuaimi acknowledged the significant pace of change in these fields but explained that the museum was never designed to predict exactly what the future would look like.
Instead, its purpose is to explore possibilities, encourage visitors to question assumptions and consider the decisions that may shape what comes next.
As scientific discoveries and technologies continue to develop, the museum believes its exhibitions must evolve to reflect new perspectives while maintaining its central purpose of encouraging curiosity and exploration.
The Museum of the Future as a Living Museum
The museum describes itself as a living museum, reflecting its approach to presenting ideas and possibilities that continue to evolve.
Unlike a traditional museum that often preserves objects and stories from the past, the Museum of the Future explores what developments in science and technology could mean for humanity.
Its exhibitions are designed to respond to changing ideas, discoveries and questions rather than remain unchanged indefinitely.
Al Nuaimi explained that the concept of a living museum means creating a place that continues to develop alongside the future it seeks to explore.
This approach allows the museum to introduce new perspectives and experiences as technology advances, helping visitors understand the potential impact of emerging developments.
Will the Museum Continue Changing Every Few Years?
The upcoming transformation does not necessarily mean the entire museum will undergo a complete redesign on a fixed schedule.
According to Al Nuaimi, there is no set lifespan for the museum’s exhibitions. The duration of each experience depends on its subject, how quickly the field develops and whether new discoveries create opportunities for different ways of exploring it.
Some themes may remain relevant for many years, even as their presentation evolves.
This flexible approach allows the museum to respond to scientific progress without requiring every exhibition or experience to be replaced at regular intervals.
Public Ideas to Help Shape the New Experience
The museum has also invited people around the world to contribute ideas about the subjects and possibilities it should explore.
More than 1,000 ideas were submitted in response to its call for public contributions ahead of its fifth anniversary. Some of these suggestions are already being incorporated into the new visitor experience, although officials have not revealed which ideas were selected.
The transformation follows the museum’s first chapter, during which it welcomed more than five million visitors and hosted 620 events and 224 educational programmes.
What Visitors Can Expect When the Museum Reopens
The Museum of the Future’s 2027 reopening will mark a new chapter for one of Dubai’s prominent attractions.
While the building’s exterior may remain familiar, visitors can expect new exhibitions, immersive environments and opportunities to engage more directly with science, research and emerging technologies.
The museum aims to bring people from different backgrounds and disciplines together to explore questions about humanity’s future.
Although the current exhibitions will be removed, its central ambition will remain unchanged: encouraging people to think critically, explore new possibilities and consider how their choices today may shape the world of tomorrow.
