The talks are taking place while both governments are dealing with a range of international security challenges.

Reuters has identified geopolitical issues including Taiwan, the Iran conflict and broader strategic competition among the subjects surrounding the summit.

China's Foreign Ministry has said Beijing hopes the visit can strengthen dialogue, properly manage differences and expand cooperation between the two countries.

That does not necessarily mean the two sides will reach agreements on their most difficult disputes. Many of the issues involve longstanding differences in national policy and strategic interests.
