Taiwan Remains a Sensitive Issue

Taiwan is also expected to remain one of the most sensitive subjects in US-China relations.

Reuters reported on September 22 that Xi is expected to raise US arms sales to Taiwan during his discussions with Trump.

Beijing considers Taiwan part of China and strongly opposes US military support for the island. Taiwan is self-governed and rejects Beijing's sovereignty claim.

The United States maintains unofficial relations with Taiwan and, under the Taiwan Relations Act, provides support intended to help Taiwan maintain sufficient defensive capabilities.

The issue has remained a recurring source of disagreement between Washington and Beijing and will be closely watched during the summit.
