UAE winter break: Residents book last-minute getaways and micro-breaks
Dubai: UAE residents are increasingly opting for shorter and more spontaneous holidays during the National Day and winter holiday season, with travel companies reporting a rise in last-minute bookings.
Many families are now finalising their travel plans just seven to ten days before departure, preferring convenient short breaks over lengthy international holidays.
According to travel industry executives, domestic staycations and regional GCC packages are increasingly being booked within a week of travel, compared with the earlier booking window of three to four weeks.
From two-night beach holidays in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah to five-day trips to Georgia and Azerbaijan, residents are adjusting their travel plans while continuing to look for opportunities to take a break.
The trend comes amid geopolitical uncertainty, which has made some residents more cautious about travelling overseas. However, travel companies say this has not resulted in widespread cancellations, as many travellers are simply choosing destinations with convenient flight connections, simpler entry requirements and attractive accommodation rates.
UAE Staycations Become a Popular Holiday Choice
Adil Tanrıverdi, CEO of Tripventura, said spontaneous bookings and shorter holidays are becoming increasingly popular among UAE residents.
The trend is particularly noticeable among families looking to make the most of weekends, public holidays and school breaks without committing to extended trips.
According to Tanrıverdi, around 45 per cent of the company's domestic staycation and regional GCC packages are now finalised within seven to ten days of departure. Previously, customers typically booked three to four weeks in advance.
He also reported a 30 to 35 per cent increase in domestic staycation bookings compared with the same period last year.
For local holidays, two to three-night stays are emerging as the preferred choice, particularly at beach and desert resorts in Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Abu Dhabi.
Meanwhile, residents choosing regional destinations are opting for four to five-day itineraries to places such as Musandam and Salalah in Oman, Baku and Tbilisi.
Families Combine Local Getaways With International Holidays
Rather than cancelling overseas travel plans, many UAE residents are adopting a combination of domestic and international holidays.
Tanrıverdi said families are increasingly choosing a hybrid travel approach, combining weekend getaways across Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi and Fujairah with their planned international holidays.
This allows residents to travel more frequently without the exhaustion and expenses associated with longer trips.
The UAE's hospitality sector is also attracting more local visitors as the winter season approaches, with hotels and resorts offering opportunities for short family breaks.
Dubai and Sharjah Residents Show Interest in Local Staycations
Reena M Philip, director and general manager of Aurora Travel and Tourism, Dubai, said her company was also receiving more enquiries about domestic holidays.
She noted that residents, particularly those living in Dubai and Sharjah, are showing interest in booking quality hotels within the UAE.
According to Philip, hotel occupancy levels have not been at their usual levels this year, resulting in comparatively lower accommodation rates than in previous years.
These competitive prices are encouraging residents to choose local staycations instead of travelling abroad.
She added that many families are taking advantage of attractive hotel deals to enjoy relaxing breaks without the additional planning involved in international travel.
Georgia, Almaty and Oman Attract UAE Travellers
For residents who still want to travel internationally, short-haul destinations with convenient connections and relatively straightforward visa procedures are gaining popularity.
Travel companies are reporting interest in destinations such as:
Georgia: Popular for short holidays, sightseeing and convenient travel options.
Almaty, Kazakhstan: Attracting residents looking for short international breaks.
Oman: Offering accessible regional travel options, including Musandam and Salalah.
Azerbaijan: Emerging as an alternative for travellers seeking short-to-medium-haul holidays.
Türkiye: Continuing to attract UAE residents looking for international holiday experiences.
Vietnam: Drawing interest from travellers considering destinations with faster visa processing.
Philip said some customers were choosing five-day holidays to Georgia, Almaty and Vietnam. Travellers who already hold valid Schengen visas are also continuing to visit European destinations.
Geopolitical Uncertainty Changes Overseas Travel Decisions
Ongoing geopolitical developments are influencing how some UAE residents plan their holidays.
Philip said uncertainty surrounding international travel has made some customers hesitant about travelling abroad this year.
However, Tanrıverdi said the situation has encouraged travellers to reconsider their destinations and routes rather than abandon their plans entirely.
He reported that cancellations across Tripventura's portfolio remained below 5 per cent.
The company also recorded a temporary decline of around 15 to 20 per cent in leisure enquiries for certain transit-heavy routes and parts of the Eastern Mediterranean.
At the same time, outbound demand for stable short-to-medium-haul alternatives, including Oman, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye and Central European cities, increased by 25 per cent.
According to Tanrıverdi, travellers are increasingly prioritising direct flights, simpler entry requirements and convenient travel arrangements.
Competitive Hotel Rates Encourage Holiday Bookings
Attractive accommodation prices are also influencing travel decisions among UAE residents.
Shilpa Mahtani, co-founder and managing director of bnbme holiday homes, had earlier noted that hotel and holiday home rates were slightly lower than during the same period last year.
These comparatively affordable rates are encouraging travellers to book early and secure better deals.
Shorter Holidays Shape UAE's Winter Travel Season
The growing popularity of micro-holidays and spontaneous bookings reflects changing travel preferences among UAE residents.
Instead of planning lengthy international trips, families are increasingly choosing shorter domestic stays, regional GCC holidays and convenient international destinations.
With National Day and the winter holiday season approaching, competitive hotel rates, flexible travel plans and easier connections are expected to remain important factors influencing residents' holiday decisions.
