UAE residents will soon be able to own a flying car they can drive
UAE residents could soon have the option of owning a flying car that can be driven on roads, parked at home and converted into an aircraft for short flights. Chinese company Aridge is preparing to introduce its personal flying vehicle, offering a new approach to private transportation.
Unlike electric air taxis developed by companies such as Joby Aviation for commercial passenger services, Aridge's Land Aircraft Carrier is designed for individual ownership. It combines a six-wheeled road vehicle with a detachable electric aircraft capable of carrying two passengers.
Tan Wang, Co-Founder and Vice-President of Aridge and General Manager of XPENG Design, explained how the vehicle works, its technology and what potential buyers in the UAE should know before its commercial launch.
How Does Aridge's Flying Car Work?
The Land Aircraft Carrier consists of two separate modules: a six-wheeled road vehicle and a two-seat electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft stored inside its rear compartment.
Owners can drive the vehicle to a designated flying location and deploy the aircraft when needed. The separation and reconnection process is automated and designed to operate with a one-touch mechanism.
According to Wang, the system uses at least seven systems and more than 1,000 components to enable the two modules to connect and separate.
Once activated, the vehicle opens its rear compartment and releases the aircraft. A specialised air suspension system helps adjust the aircraft's position to suit different ground surfaces.
After completing a flight, the aircraft can return to the road vehicle through an automated docking process. Cameras identify the aircraft and guide the vehicle towards it, while the suspension adjusts the height to ensure proper alignment.
Wang said the reconnection process takes approximately four to five minutes.
Who Can Buy the Aridge Land Aircraft Carrier?
Unlike commercial air taxis, Aridge's flying car targets individual consumers interested in owning their own aircraft.
One of its key features is the ability to store the aircraft inside the road vehicle. This means owners may not need to rent separate hangar space or keep the aircraft at an airport.
The vehicle can be parked in a personal parking space, subject to applicable parking and vehicle regulations.
Aridge has reportedly received around 7,000 pre-orders globally, including approximately 600 from the GCC market, according to Wang.
What Licences and Permits Will UAE Residents Need?
Owning a flying car does not automatically give buyers permission to operate it anywhere in the UAE. The aircraft must receive the necessary aviation certifications and regulatory approvals before it can legally fly.
Wang explained that Aridge first needs to secure type certification from China's Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).
Following this, the company plans to seek validation through the UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to support legal operations in the country.
This certification process will be an important step towards introducing the vehicle to the UAE market.
Where Will Owners Be Allowed to Fly?
Flying the vehicle will depend on approved flight locations, airspace regulations and the infrastructure established by local authorities.
Owners will not necessarily be allowed to take off from any open space or residential parking area. Designated flying zones and aviation permissions will determine where the aircraft can operate.
Aridge has signed an agreement with Ras Al Khaimah to establish a regulatory sandbox for testing the technology under the supervision of UAE aviation authorities.
The company is also exploring opportunities to use existing aviation infrastructure, including vertiports being developed by Skyports for Joby's air taxi operations.
According to Wang, sharing existing facilities and helicopter landing locations could help reduce the need to develop a completely separate infrastructure network.
What Does This Mean for the Future of Personal Transportation in the UAE?
Aridge's Land Aircraft Carrier represents a new direction in personal mobility by combining road transportation with electric aviation.
Its detachable aircraft, automated docking system and road-based storage concept could make personal flying vehicles more accessible to individual consumers.
However, commercial availability and everyday use in the UAE will depend on certification, aviation regulations, approved flying locations and supporting infrastructure.
If these requirements are met, the concept could introduce a new option for personal transportation in the UAE, bringing road travel and short-distance flights together in a single vehicle.
