UAE holiday travellers face higher airfares as global airlines warn of price hikes
Dubai: UAE residents planning overseas trips during the December holidays may face increasing travel costs as airlines worldwide warn of higher airfares due to rising jet fuel prices. Carriers are reviewing ticket prices, flight schedules and operating expenses to manage the growing financial pressure.
Ryanair, Europe's largest airline by passenger numbers, has become the latest carrier to warn of potential fare increases. The airline said European airfares could rise by as much as 20% next year if elevated fuel prices continue.
Meanwhile, US holiday airfares have already reached their highest levels in a decade, according to travel booking platform Hopper.
For UAE residents planning to visit family or travel abroad, these developments highlight the importance of comparing ticket prices, considering alternative travel dates and checking additional charges before booking.
Airlines Face Rising Fuel Costs Worldwide
The pressure on airlines is not limited to one region. Carriers across Europe and the United States are dealing with higher fuel expenses, prompting some to reduce flight capacity and review operating costs to protect their profitability.
However, this does not mean that every international flight departing from the UAE will become more expensive by the same percentage. Airfares depend on several factors, including destinations, travel dates, passenger demand and airline capacity.
Nevertheless, the latest industry warnings suggest that travellers could find fewer affordable options on certain international routes.
European Airfares Could Increase by Up to 20%
Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary warned on Monday that European airlines could introduce double-digit fare increases in 2027 as existing fuel hedging agreements expire and carriers become more exposed to higher market prices.
"We're certainly looking at double-digit (percentage) fare increases across Europe from all airlines in 2027," O'Leary said in a video accompanying the airline's quarterly earnings announcement.
During a separate CNBC interview, he indicated that ticket prices could increase by as much as 20% next year.
The airline expects its annual fuel bill to rise by approximately €2 billion ($2.24 billion) in its next financial year.
Ryanair has already reduced its winter flight schedule in response to rising expenses and is considering additional cost-saving measures.
These measures include temporary pay freezes and greater use of artificial intelligence in administrative operations.
The airline's warning reflects the wider challenges facing the aviation industry as fuel prices continue to influence operating costs and ticket pricing decisions.
What UAE Travellers Should Consider Before Booking
For UAE residents planning international holidays, the possibility of higher airfares makes early travel planning increasingly important.
Travellers can consider a few practical steps to manage their travel budgets:
Compare airline fares: Check prices across different airlines and booking platforms before confirming tickets.
Stay flexible with dates: Flying on weekdays or choosing alternative departure dates may help reduce costs.
Book early: Monitor fares in advance, particularly for popular holiday destinations.
Check additional charges: Consider baggage fees, seat selection charges and other optional costs.
Explore alternative destinations: Compare different destinations that fit within your travel budget.
While higher fuel costs could push airfares upwards in 2027, the actual impact on UAE travellers will depend on individual routes, airline decisions and seasonal demand.
