UAE Driving Licence Rules 2027: Who Gets 1, 2, 5 or 10 Years of Validity?
The UAE is introducing new driving licence regulations from January 1, 2027, bringing changes to licence validity periods, minimum driving ages and renewal requirements.
Under the updated federal traffic rules, the validity of a driving licence will depend on the applicant's age and residency status.
The new framework aims to establish clear guidelines for motorists across the country.
Both UAE citizens and expatriate residents will be affected by the revised provisions.
These changes are part of the country's updated traffic regulations.
New UAE Driving Licence Validity Periods
Under the new rules, applicants below the age of 21 will receive temporary driving licences valid for one year, with the option to renew for another year.
First-time applicants aged 21 and above will initially receive licences valid for two years.
After renewal, UAE nationals and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) citizens will be eligible for licences valid for ten years.
Expatriate residents will receive driving licences with a five-year validity period.
Both groups can renew their licences for equivalent periods.
Minimum Age Requirements for Different Vehicles
The updated regulations also establish minimum age requirements for different vehicle categories.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old to obtain a light vehicle driving licence, while heavy vehicle licences require applicants to be at least 20.
The minimum age for operating light and heavy buses is 21 years.
Motorcycle licences have two categories, with minimum ages of 17 and 21, respectively.
Applicants for light or heavy mechanical equipment licences must be at least 20 years old.
Driving Licence Requirements and Exemptions
Applicants must meet several conditions to obtain or renew a UAE driving licence, including holding a valid Emirates ID, meeting the required age, passing driving tests and paying applicable fees.
Medical fitness must also be confirmed through an approved healthcare authority.
The regulations provide special arrangements for People of Determination.
Certain visitors with valid foreign or international driving licences may drive in the UAE without obtaining a local licence, subject to eligibility conditions.
The new regulations will officially come into effect on January 1, 2027.
What UAE Residents Should Know
The revised rules introduce different licence validity periods based on age and nationality, making it important for motorists to understand their eligibility.
Expatriates will generally receive five-year licences after the initial licensing stage, while UAE and GCC nationals can receive ten-year licences.
Drivers should also check the minimum age and medical requirements applicable to their vehicle category.
Visitors' exemptions do not automatically apply to expatriates living in the UAE.
Motorists should prepare for the updated regulations before their implementation in 2027.
