2. Blue-Ringed Octopus
The blue-ringed octopus is small, colourful and surprisingly dangerous.
Found mainly in the Pacific and Indian oceans, including waters around Australia, this octopus carries tetrodotoxin, a powerful neurotoxin.
Its bite may initially seem minor, but severe poisoning can interfere with breathing and muscle function.
The bright blue rings become especially visible when the animal feels threatened.
Important
Never pick up or handle a blue-ringed octopus, even if it appears calm.
