Khalifa University Launches Initiative to Empower Women Scientists in the UAE
New Programme Supports Women’s Scientific Leadership
Khalifa University of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi has launched a new initiative designed to help more women progress into leadership roles in science and academia. Known as KU-MIRA, or Mentoring & Impact in Research & Academia, the programme aims to strengthen women’s careers across science, healthcare and engineering. It will support research excellence, professional development and greater recognition for women’s contributions. The initiative also aligns with the UAE’s broader ambitions to develop scientific talent and build a knowledge-driven economy.
Building on Women’s Participation in Research
Women already make up a significant part of the university’s academic community, accounting for 59 per cent of undergraduate students and 44 per cent of PhD students. They also represent 34 per cent of researchers and 19 per cent of faculty members. The university aims to build on this foundation by creating more opportunities for women to advance their research, strengthen their professional profiles and take on senior academic responsibilities. The programme reflects the need to turn educational participation into long-term career progression.
Three Pillars to Strengthen Women in Science
KU-MIRA will operate through three main pillars: Producing Science, Amplifying Science and Sustaining Scientists. These focus on improving research performance and academic progression, increasing the visibility and influence of women researchers, and developing mentorship opportunities and professional networks. The university also plans to create a directory highlighting women researchers and their areas of expertise. A separate platform, Women Shaping Science, will showcase scientists whose work contributes to research, innovation and solutions to real-world challenges.
Supporting the UAE’s Future Research Leaders
The initiative will be led by Dr Maryam Khaleel Alhashmi, an associate professor of chemical and petroleum engineering, who will serve as its founding director. KU-MIRA will be introduced in phases, with progress assessed through research outcomes, teaching, career advancement and institutional impact. By helping women scientists gain recognition, access professional networks and develop leadership skills, Khalifa University aims to strengthen its research community. The programme is expected to contribute to the UAE’s wider goals in innovation, scientific discovery and economic development.
