How Dubai Helped Filipino Expat Romuel Perey Transform His Life
A Fresh Start in the UAE
When Romuel Perey arrived in Dubai in 2011, he was looking for a fresh start rather than following a detailed career plan.
Originally from the Philippines, he had completed technical training and worked as a technician, but struggled to find long-term satisfaction in his jobs.
His father, who was already living in Dubai, helped him secure an opportunity in furniture sales.
The move became a turning point in his personal and professional life.
Over time, Dubai helped him discover new interests and build a career he had never originally planned.
Discovering a Passion for Videography
Perey returned to the Philippines in 2013 and worked in a call centre before moving back to Dubai in 2015 to pursue opportunities in videography.
He learned practical production skills, including lighting, directing and audio, while working with different companies.
He gradually expanded his experience into photography, live streaming and event production.
His work eventually took him to Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
He also contributed to productions involving international personalities, including John Cena, Chris Hemsworth and Christina Aguilera.
Building a Freelance Career During Difficult Times
In 2019, Perey decided to become a freelancer, but the Covid-19 pandemic soon disrupted the events and production industries.
With projects disappearing, he invested his remaining back pay in video-switching equipment and began offering live-streaming services.
His first client was a coaching company that needed support for online sessions.
The decision helped him continue working when traditional events were restricted.
This experience demonstrated how adapting to changing circumstances can create new professional opportunities.
Giving Back to Dubai’s Creative Community
Over the years, Perey progressed from sharing crowded accommodation with others to having his own apartment, car and professional equipment.
He credits the people he met in Dubai and the support of fellow freelancers for helping him grow.
Today, he also shares his knowledge by conducting photography training and teaching people how to take better pictures using mobile phones.
His journey highlights how persistence, practical learning and collaboration can open new career paths.
For other expatriates, his message is simple: keep learning, remain open to change and do not be afraid to start again.
