UAE President declares January 7 as Zayed the Founder Day

The UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has declared January 7 as Zayed the Founder Day to honour the nation's Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and celebrate his lasting legacy.

The occasion will be observed annually, providing an opportunity for individuals, institutions and communities to reflect on Sheikh Zayed's contributions to the UAE and the values that shaped the nation.

Honouring Sheikh Zayed's Legacy

Sheikh Zayed was the UAE's first President and played a central role in establishing the Union in 1971. He was widely respected for his patience, wisdom, generosity and forward-looking vision, earning him the title of the wise man of the Arabs.

Remembering his contributions, Sheikh Mohamed said, “As he led efforts to establish the Union, laid its foundations, and nurtured its development, his life and legacy were defined by his vision, generosity, and service to humanity.”

His leadership helped lay the foundations for the UAE's development and shaped its commitment to progress, cooperation and humanitarian service.

Zayed the Founder Day will serve as more than a single-day commemoration. January 7 will mark the beginning of initiatives and programmes that continue throughout the year, encouraging people and institutions to bring Sheikh Zayed's principles into everyday life.

These activities will offer opportunities to reflect on his leadership, humanitarian work and contributions to the country's growth.

Helping Younger Generations Learn About Sheikh Zayed

One of the key priorities of the initiative is to help younger generations understand Sheikh Zayed's life and legacy.

The programmes will particularly focus on those born after his passing, helping them learn about the vision, values and principles that influenced the UAE's formation and development.

Through educational activities and community initiatives, the occasion aims to keep his legacy relevant for future generations.

Why Was January 7 Chosen?

According to the initiative, January 7 represents two important references to the UAE's founding story: the seven emirates that united to form one nation and 1971, the year the Union was established.

The date also falls in the first week of the new year, when schools and other institutions resume their activities. This timing provides an opportunity to begin the year by reconnecting with Sheikh Zayed's values and reflecting on their importance in modern UAE society.

The annual observance will provide a platform to celebrate Sheikh Zayed's enduring influence and encourage continued engagement with his vision for the UAE.

Through year-long programmes and initiatives, Zayed the Founder Day aims to ensure that his contributions remain an important part of the nation's identity and continue to inspire future generations.
