Typhoon Dujuan Threatens Eastern Japan With Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Eastern Japan is facing a threat of torrential rain and strong winds as Typhoon Dujuan approaches the Pacific coast, prompting warnings over flooding, landslides and rising river levels.

Forecasts issued ahead of September 21 identified the Pacific coastline from Tokai to Tohoku, along with the Izu Islands, as areas requiring particular caution. Some locations were forecast to receive up to 200 millimetres of rain.

The storm was expected to pass east of the Kanto region before moving farther offshore. Its exact track will influence where the heaviest rainfall and strongest winds occur

The approaching storm has also raised concerns for the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. Japan’s chef de mission, Kosei Inoue, said organisers were preparing for potential weather-related disruption. Earlier severe weather had already caused delays and postponements to some competitions, Reuters reported on September 17. 

Residents and visitors should follow local evacuation instructions and check transport operators’ updates before travelling. Travellers from the UAE and elsewhere should confirm flight and rail arrangements directly with their providers.
