Sakina Expands Mental Health Access Across Abu Dhabi
ABU DHABI, 24 September 2026 — Mental health services offered through Sakina have expanded from two primary healthcare clinics to around 40 integrated access points across its network, its chief executive said at the Forbes Middle East Healthcare Leaders Summit in Abu Dhabi.
Speaking during a session on early intervention on 23 September, Dr Zain Al Yafei described a model that brings mental and physical healthcare together. He said depression and anxiety can affect recovery and other health outcomes, particularly for people with chronic or complex conditions. Sakina’s approach, he said, covers staying healthy, getting healthy and staying well.
The expansion reflects a wider effort to make support available within everyday healthcare settings. In an August update about services across the emirate, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi said mental health care had been integrated into primary care centres. It said more than 1,930 family physicians had been trained to diagnose and manage common conditions such as anxiety and depression, with referrals to specialists when needed.
At the summit, Al Yafei said the aim is to intervene earlier and measure results through recovery and patients’ ability to remain active in their families, workplaces and communities, alongside consultation numbers.
How residents can seek support
Abu Dhabi residents can call the Department of Health’s 24-hour 800-SAKINA helpline (800-725462) for mental health support in Arabic or English. The department says the service offers psychological first aid and access to qualified professionals. Residents can also ask a primary care provider about available mental health services and referrals.
