Dubai to Use AI to Control All Traffic Lights, Targeting at Least 10% Less Congestion
Dubai Plans Citywide AI Traffic Signal System
Dubai is preparing to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) technology across its traffic signal network to improve road movement and reduce congestion.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is working to connect all traffic lights to its traffic management centre in Al Barsha.
The project is expected to be completed by early 2027.
According to RTA officials, the upgraded system could help reduce traffic congestion by at least 10 per cent.
The initiative forms part of Dubai's wider plans to develop smarter and more efficient transport services.
Smart Signals Will Respond to Changing Traffic Conditions
The new technology will use information collected through road cameras and existing traffic monitoring systems.
AI will analyse vehicle movements, identify possible bottlenecks and predict where congestion may develop.
Based on these findings, traffic signal timings can be adjusted dynamically to respond to changing road conditions.
This approach is expected to make traffic management more flexible than traditional fixed signal schedules.
The RTA will also continue coordinating with Dubai Police to support traffic operations across the emirate.
AI Strategy Covers 41 Areas Across RTA
The traffic signal project is one part of the RTA's updated AI strategy, which covers 41 areas across its departments and operations.
The authority plans to introduce AI applications in stages over approximately two and a half years.
The wider programme also includes public transport planning, customer services and infrastructure management.
AI-powered assistants are expected to make everyday transactions, including paying traffic fines and renewing vehicle registrations and driving licences, easier for residents.
The strategy aims to move more than 50 per cent of services and operations into an AI-assisted system within two years.
Dubai Targets Better Transport Services and Efficiency
Beyond reducing traffic delays, the RTA expects its AI strategy to improve operational efficiency and public services.
The programme is projected to generate more than Dh300 million in additional annual value.
AI will also support the monitoring and management of transport infrastructure, helping the authority oversee its growing network of roads and transport assets.
These developments reflect Dubai's broader ambition to use advanced technology to improve daily mobility.
For motorists, the planned traffic signal upgrades could eventually mean smoother journeys and more responsive road management.
