Emirates launches travel insurance covering war zones, hotel stays, and free extensions

Dubai: Emirates rolled out a new travel insurance product on Wednesday, billing it as the most comprehensive cover offered by any airline. The policy adds protection for conflict-related medical costs, extended stays, and trip disruptions.

The Dubai carrier built the new Comprehensive Travel Cover with global insurer Travel Guard. Customers can buy it while booking a flight on emirates.com or add it to an existing reservation through Manage Booking.

What the policy covers

The headline addition is conflict-related cover. It reimburses up to $25,000 in medical expenses tied to conflict incidents and lets travelers extend a trip by as much as 30 days at no extra charge. According to Emirates, this protection applies even when a government has issued a travel advisory for the destination.

The product also bundles more standard protections: unlimited worldwide medical and emergency evacuation cover, compensation for cancelled trips, and payouts for delayed or lost baggage.

Beyond the insurance itself, Emirates is adding airline-run support during disruptions, including airspace closures. The airline will arrange hotel stays for affected passengers and rebook them onto available flights at no additional cost when their original itinerary falls through. Emirates frames this hotel and rebooking support as a separate airline service, distinct from the insurance benefits underwritten by Travel Guard.

Existing perks remain in place alongside the new cover, including free date changes on tickets bought from April 2 and a 24-hour fare hold option.

Why Emirates made the move

Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, said the carrier noticed steady travel demand even as customers grew anxious about coverage gaps, adding that "there was a gap in the market." He said the airline wanted customers booking through Dubai to feel more confident planning trips during a busy summer travel season. Clark had previewed the launch to the Financial Times in Berlin the week before the rollout.

Travel Guard's Head of Global Business and Partnerships, Russel Antonio, described the product as setting a new standard for traveler protection in the insurance industry.

Where it's available

Emirates is selling the new cover in 27 markets at launch, including the UAE, the UK, Germany, France, Canada, Singapore, New Zealand, South Africa, Bahrain, and Kuwait, among others across Europe.

The launch follows a string of disruption-related updates from Emirates over recent months, including expanded rebooking windows and refund guidance for passengers affected by regional flight cancellations.
