As the cold season fades away, the UAE is truly feeling the heat due to the strong rays of the sun.

Lately, one of the hottest weeks in April was recorded, and it didn't rain much either; as stated by the National Centre of Meteorology.

While florals have suddenly replaced winter coats, people seem to be asking, has summer started already? Loose fitting clothes may lead one to think so, but in fact the real hot season has ended.

According to a statement from the Dubai Astronomy Group, June 21 is celebrated as the start of summer in the UAE. It's quite interesting that Khadijah Al Hariri has some insight on summer solstices too. "The moment when the sun reaches its peaks and is positioned furthest north," is exactly how she describes summer solstice.

It’s also the case that the Sun’s position determines the length of nights and days. In other words, those are the longest day and shortest night, and this event can also occur because “Earth's tilt is most directly angled toward the Sun at that time" as Khadijah puts it.

NCM has already given advice on getting through the heat safely. These pointers enable residents to enjoy the sun while being safe:

  • Drinking enough water and other fluids.

  • Staying away from the sun.

  • Putting on loose cotton clothes.

  • Wearing hats and sunglasses.

  • Not doing outdoor activities during the hottest times of the day.

  • Avoiding placing fans or windows in closed rooms.
