Elijah, a 5-year-old boy, was able to walk again and return to school after successful treatment at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) in Abu Dhabi.Elijah had been experiencing chronic back pain due to a rare disease called chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO). After undergoing investigations, he was diagnosed with CRMO at SKMC’s rheumatology clinic.

With the prescribed treatment, Elijah’s condition showed significant improvement. He regained the ability to stand up and walk, and experienced reduced pain. He was eventually able to return to school.

Dr Kamran Mahmood, consultant paediatric rheumatology at SKMC, who took charge of the case, said that the successful treatment of Elijah’s CRMO offers hope for other children with this rare condition. He also emphasized the importance of specialist rheumatology services for prompt diagnosis and treatment of children with unexplained joint symptoms or pains.

Elijah’s mother was delighted to see her son walk again and return to school. She expressed her gratitude to SKMC for giving her son a second chance at life. She also commended the care and compassion shown by the hospital’s dedicated team of specialists.
