One resident, Zubair Khan from Al Majaz, recounts his experience of navigating flooded streets to obtain basic necessities such as drinking water, dairy products, chicken, and bread. With local grocery shops shuttered since the onset of the rains, Khan was left with no choice but to trek to a nearby hypermarket through waterlogged roads. However, upon arrival, he found shelves depleted as other residents had rushed to stockpile essentials in anticipation of prolonged disruptions.

The challenges extend beyond individual residents to wholesale supply chain companies, which have struggled to deliver supplies to retailers due to the lingering effects of the floods. Kamal Vachani, partner and group director of Al Maya Group, acknowledges the surge in demand for fresh food items post-rains, highlighting the increased interest in bread, vegetables, and fruits. Despite these challenges, Vachani reassures customers that Al Maya Group has implemented proactive measures to ensure the continuity of its supply chain, including operating its in-house bakery at full capacity to meet heightened demand.

The situation underscores the vulnerability of supply chains to natural disasters and extreme weather events. While efforts are underway to restore normalcy and address the immediate needs of residents, the disruption caused by the recent rains serves as a wake-up call for stakeholders to strengthen resilience and contingency planning.
