The Transport General Authority, for the first time in this year’s Hajj season, is launching the trial of self-driving electric buses to serve the pilgrims.

The primary objective of this initiative is to offer innovative and sustainable transportation solutions that are environmentally friendly.

By embracing technologies, the authority aims to enhance the overall pilgrimage experience and provide multiple transportation options for the pilgrims of the Holy Mosque.

The self-driving buses operate autonomously, thanks to artificial intelligence, cameras and surrounding sensors.

Without requiring human intervention, they navigate along a predetermined route, utilising the data collected and analysed during their movement to make informed decisions.

Each bus accommodates 11 seats and can operate for six hours on a single charge. With a maximum speed of 30 km/h, these buses are designed to facilitate the transportation of pilgrims during the Hajj season.

Additionally, this trial period serves as an opportunity to evaluate the feasibility of utilising these advanced technologies for future Hajj operations and to establish the necessary requirements for their commercial implementation.
