New church to open next to BAPS Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi

A significant milestone in Abu Dhabi's religious landscape is on the horizon as the Church of South India (CSI) Parish prepares to open its new facility next to the BAPS Hindu temple in Abu Mureikha. This development marks the first-ever church in Abu Dhabi, underscoring the emirate's commitment to fostering religious diversity and tolerance.

The inauguration of the new church, set to take place with a soft opening ceremony on Sunday, is a momentous occasion for the CSI community and the broader Christian population in the region. Led by Rt. Rev. Dr Malayil Sabu Koshy Cherian, the Bishop of Madhya Kerala Diocese of the CSI, the ceremony will be a symbol of unity and inclusivity.

The church's establishment on a 4.37-acre land gifted by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan reflects the UAE's ethos of generosity and support for religious freedom. Since the inception of CSI's services in Abu Dhabi in 1979, the leadership has consistently extended its backing, fostering an environment of harmony and coexistence.

With a membership of approximately 4 million, CSI stands as India's second-largest Christian church, representing a diverse community united in faith. The advent of the new church building signifies a pivotal moment for CSI followers in Abu Dhabi, offering them a dedicated space for worship and community gatherings.

The architectural design of the church is both distinctive and symbolic, featuring an earthy-toned, octagon-shaped structure with a front elevation resembling angel wings. This design motif serves as a poignant reminder of the protection and guidance sought by believers, encapsulating the essence of spirituality and divine presence.

Rev. Lalji M. Philip, Vicar of the Parish, expressed the church's commitment to serving the community and spreading the message of God's love. The new place of worship is envisioned as a sanctuary for all, embodying the principles of compassion, inclusivity, and service to humanity.

While the inaugural ceremony will be limited to invited guests due to pandemic safety measures, the church aims to extend its reach through online live broadcasts, enabling well-wishers and followers to participate virtually. Additionally, starting from May 5, regular services will be open to all, providing an opportunity for individuals of diverse backgrounds to come together in prayer and fellowship.
