Indian Expats in UAE Pay Tribute to Flydubai Pilot Captain Smit Machchhar in Dubai

More than 200 members of the Indian community in the UAE gathered at the Indian Consulate in Dubai to pay tribute to Flydubai pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, who has been praised for his actions during a serious cockpit incident.

The special gathering saw a packed auditorium applaud the captain for his bravery and the role he played in helping protect the lives of those aboard the flight.

Indian Community Gives Captain Smit a Standing Ovation

The tribute was held at the Indian Consulate in Dubai as part of a special programme organised with the Indian People Forum UAE.

Attendees were invited to stand and applaud Captain Smit, resulting in a warm standing ovation.

Indian diplomats and members of the expatriate community attended the gathering, reflecting the high regard for the pilot and his actions during the flight emergency.

A Split-Second Decision During the Flight Emergency

Captain Smit was operating Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 when an emergency unfolded inside the cockpit.

Despite suffering serious injuries during the incident, the pilot managed to open the cockpit door, allowing crew members and passengers to intervene.

The aircraft was subsequently diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

Captain Smit and other passengers received medical assistance following the incident.

Captain Smit Continues His Recovery

Following the incident, Captain Smit was initially treated in Saudi Arabia before being transferred to the UAE for further medical care.

Indian officials have said that the pilot is making steady progress as he continues his recovery.

Indian officials have remained in contact with his family and medical team during his recovery.

The captain has also received messages of support and appreciation from senior officials in both India and the UAE.

Indian and UAE Officials Praise His Courage

Captain Smit has received widespread recognition for his actions since the September 30 incident.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with the pilot during his recovery, while senior UAE officials also praised his courage and sense of responsibility.

Indian Ambassador to the UAE Dr Deepak Mittal previously visited Captain Smit and his family at the hospital and described the pilot as a brave son of India.
