Meta-backed instant messaging app WhatsApp has announced a new chat transfer feature which allows users to transfer their chats to a new device, by simply using a QR code.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the new chat transfer feature via Facebook.

“Data is only shared between your two devices, and is fully encrypted during transfer,” WhatsApp said in response to Zuckerberg’s announcement.

The new WhatsApp feature will make it easier for users to transfer chats to a new device without having to back it up on iCloud or Google Drive and then download it to a new device.

However, the feature only works between devices with the same operating system, so Android to Android or iOS to iOS.

Once available, users will be able to access the feature by clicking Settings > Chats > “Chat transfer” on your old device.
