Viral Banana Art to come to Dubai expected to fetch more than Dh5 million
Dubai is about to unveil one of the most provocative idiotic work of art– if one insists to call it an art, ‘Comedian’ by artist Maurizio Cattelan. The work is now known because of how it was first showcased during Art Basel in Miami Beach back in 2019 where it took place in an exhibition, a banana that was taped on the wall with duct tape, which caused quite a stir when it was revealed, and it can one be seen briefly at Sotheby's in DIFC on November 4, Monday to public.
Since its introduction, Comedian has initiated what some would call a never ending conflict of the definitions surrounding the term 'art', even though many would call the conception stupid, others still incredibly appreciate the artwork and go to unprecedented lengths to see it, bringing crowds of people to the gallery and making them a target for critics.
While Comedian is still on the road to New York for a scheduled auction it is currently on tour, Dubai being one of those destinations where it was showcased and is stated that the art piece is expected to be sold for approximately Dhs5.5 million.
As the artwork is likely to get sold and reside in private collection it might be the only chance for residents and tourists around to witness it up and personal.
Having an exhibition record of being exhibited no less than four times and even one was devoured, , Comedian has exceeded expectations in Contemporary art.
As it is on one of its many stops, this time to Dubai, one can expect to witness not just a piece of fruit but a kaleidoscope of confusion as to why the entire world is so intrigued by a banana.
