UAE to get rains, cooler weather as countdown to winter starts

This is your weather for Tuesday as it stays unsettled between summer and winter and there is a likelihood of more showers during the coming days.

Heavy to moderate rain, along with stronger winds and some relief from the heat, has crossed the country in recent days, from Abu Dhabi and Dubai to Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, with some now eyeing a time to celebrate an Indian festival of lights, Diwali, with a view to the rains.

The sudden change in weather has been linked by the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) to a surface low-pressure area working with a trough of upper-air low pressure to increase cloudiness and cause instability.

“The forecast on the 21st of October and after this week for cloud cover, that will lead to some rain for the eastern and southern regions of the UAE, while clouds will develop over a few scattered regions,” said NCM meteorologist Dr Ahmed Habib. “The low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea started to impact our region about a week ago.

It is also extended towards upper layers of the atmosphere. With this comes high humidity and clouds, mostly during the mornings, with the possibility of heavy rainfall over the mountainous and southeastern region.”

Erratic weather during transition period

Residents of the UAE, which sees frequent and abrupt weather changes, especially during the transitional seasons, have also noticed a dip in temperatures over the past days, which is a welcome relief after the soaring summer heat.

Temperatures rose up to 39.3°C in Al Shawamekh, Abu Dhabi, on Sunday, while in the mountain areas of Ras Al Khaimah they reached a low of 18.1°C.
Habib said that the convective clouds have been moving around various parts of the UAE and are observed in Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Dubai, Al Ain, and Abu Dhabi. “Depending on how intense it is, it can result in different levels of rain, and at times, even hail. This is all quite normal for this period of transition,” he said.

In Dubai, Expo witnessed moderate to heavy rain last week, while other regions received their own share of showers over the past few days. “We are still monitoring the situation. Expect the same cloud formation over random areas next week. Clouds may form more in the east and the south of the country,” Habib added.

He also pointed out that the after-effects of the tropical storm in the Arabian Sea, as well as northwesterly winds mixed with easterly winds are still having some effect in creating this unstable weather.

“Winter is set to begin on December 21, but we are already seeing signs of unstable weather setting in. As the number of clouds increase during the daytime, night time temperatures don’t get as cold as one might expect in temperature. This is due to the atmospheric dynamics, humidity, and the process of heat transfer,” Habib explained.

“We continue to do cloud seeding when we detect the presence of convective clouds,” Habib added.
