UAE: Man ordered to pay Dh30,000 after filming woman without her consent

A man has been ordered to pay Dh30,000 in fines and compensation after an Abu Dhabi court convicted him of filming a woman without her consent in a violation of her privacy.
The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court had earlier this month fined the man Dh10,000 for photographing a woman without her consent. The woman had after the ruling filed a civil suit against the man seeking compensation for the psychological and reputation damage caused to her as a result of the crime.
Court documents seen by Justdubai revealed that the Abu Dhabi Family, Civil and Administrative Court has ordered the man to pay the woman Dh20,000 in compensation and legal costs.
The man will now have to pay a total of Dh30,000, combining the criminal fine and the civil compensation. The court order stated that the criminal ruling was final and that the man’s responsibility in the violation was established
Judges also quoted articles in the UAE Civil Transactions Law that obliges the party that has caused harm to another person to provide compensation for the damage, be it physical, financial, moral, and emotional.
The woman had stated in her testimony before the court that the act had harmed her reputation in society, led to her psychological pain, and defamed her dignity.
