UAE local markets flooded with Indian, Pakistani mangoes

As summer descends upon the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the local markets are abuzz with the arrival of mango season. Considered the king of fruits, mangoes are a favorite among residents, with various varieties flooding the shelves of supermarkets and fruit markets across the country.

Among the most sought-after varieties is the Japanese Miyazaki mango, renowned for its exquisite flavor and creamy texture. Despite its hefty price tag, enthusiasts can still indulge in this delicacy by placing advance orders at select retail outlets or through online platforms.

While the Miyazaki mangoes remain exclusive and pricey, other popular varieties like Alphonso, Sindhri, Kesari, and Baiganpalli are readily available and more affordable. Vendors at local markets in Dubai and Sharjah are witnessing a surge in demand as residents eagerly await the fresh stock.

The bustling activity at fruit markets reflects the anticipation for the arrival of mangoes, with vendors stocking up on various varieties to cater to the diverse preferences of customers. From large, authentic Alphonso mangoes to the more economical Baiganpalli mangoes from India, there's something for every palate and budget.

Prices of mangoes vary depending on the variety and the place of purchase. At the Al Awir market, Alphonso mangoes start at Dh7 per kilogram, while Baiganpalli mangoes are priced at Dh4 per kilogram. Supermarkets, on the other hand, offer Alphonso mangoes at Dh20 per kilogram, reflecting the convenience factor but at a higher cost.

This season, Pakistani mangoes are in high demand due to their competitive prices and superior taste. Sindhri mangoes, a favorite among many, are available at Dh20 for a 5 to 6-kilogram box, making them an attractive option for mango enthusiasts.

In addition to Indian and Pakistani mangoes, varieties from Peru, Brazil, and Kenya are also making their way into the market. Peruvian mangoes, in particular, are gaining popularity among residents, with a 5-kilogram box costing about Dh55 and above.

While mango prices have seen a slight increase compared to previous years, vendors attribute this to higher expenses from distributors, shipping, and storage. However, they anticipate a possible decrease in prices in the coming months as the season progresses.

Overall, the arrival of mango season brings excitement and anticipation among residents in the UAE, with mango aficionados eagerly sampling the various varieties available in the local markets.
