UAE Cold Snap Ending as Temperatures Rise This Week

After days of chilly mornings and evenings, the residents in United Arab Emirates (UAE) can expect to get some respite from the cold, meteorologists said — though winter is not over yet.

Commuters huddled in jackets, early-morning joggers in beanies and families nursing cups of hot karak will soon sense milder air.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), temperatures are expected to increase slightly by mid-week, before dipping once again as the weekend approaches.

Talking about the cold spell over the past few days, Dr Mohammed Al Abri, Director of Meteorology Department at NCM, said on Monday that it was mainly caused by weather systems moving into the country from the northwest.

“This is because of the expansion of a low-pressure trough that has crossed from the northwest,” he said, adding “the UAE was under the influence of just its lower part so it had weak effect on weather.”

He added that a cold air mass accompanied by the Siberian high had ensued, “ushering in nice weather with cold conditions expected over different areas of the country”.

However, it is to be observed that residents saw light to moderate rain in other parts of Dubai on Monday.

Now, that system has changed. “The low-pressure system has gone away from the country and now we are under the influence of high pressure,” Dr Al Abri said, adding that winds would be light to moderate with low clouds in some parts.

Conditions were cool and the highest temperature recorded was 26ºC from one end of the country to the other.

“That’s a reason why there is no rainfall in the next couple of days,” he added, though it still provides us with a beginning of winter rain chance “normal for this time of year.”

Fog, mist and a mild warm-up

On the next two days, coastal and inland residents will be greeted with some morning mist or patchy fog, especially during early-morning routines. It will be partly cloudy on Tuesday with more low cloud cover over eastern and northern parts of the country.

Temperatures are set to edge up again slightly on Wednesday by two to four degrees celsius, bringing some respite from the recent chill. But the heat won’t last long.

“And we anticipate the temperature to decrease on Friday,” Dr Al Abri said.

Rain chances return by Thursday

Weather patterns could change again by Thursday, however, with areas of some parts of the country expected to get light rainfall. “What is expected to happen is light rain over the northern third on Thursday, including Sharjah and further north,” he said.

Some rain could even linger into Friday, especially across the north and the east – including Fujairah. “There is a probability of light rain from this Thursday until Friday,” Dr Al Abri said, adding that the wind may also get stronger at times, with waves in the sea peaking at 40 kmph and hitting higher waves in Arabian Gulf.
