Abu Dhabi: Private sector employees in the UAE will enjoy a paid holiday from March 30 to April 1 on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr.

The holiday will also be applied to all employees in the sector nationwide, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) announced late Tuesday, March 18.

The ministry said that the holiday will be until Wednesday, April 2 if the holy month of Ramadan was completed on the 30th day. As such, the length of the break will be subject to the sighting of the Shawwal Moon, meaning employees could enjoy a long set of days off lasting four, or five days. Every Islamic month has either 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the Moon.

The crescent will be sighted by the UAE's Moon sighting committee on March 29, 2023. Should the crescent be sighted that evening, then March 30, 31 and April 1 will fall on Eid holidays, creating a four-day break (Saturday to Tuesday).

If the Moon is not seen, however, and Ramadan goes 30-days, the first of Shawwal will be on March 31. Eid holidays will fall on March 31, April 1, and April 2 in this case giving residents a five-day break from Saturday to Wednesday (weekends included).

Ramadan won't end on March 21 with observers predicting it will take the full 30 days to finish, based on astronomical calculations by the Dubai Astronomy Group. Meaning Eid Al Fitr should be set to enjoy five days of subtitle for residents.

Those working in the public sector will receive similar days. The unified UAE holiday policy for public and private sector workers guarantees all employees receive the same time off during the year.

Less than 15 days to the holidays, residents already have plans for the recess. They say travel agency trends show a new-found interest in family group or experience holidays, rather than the standard getaway.

Agencies pointed out that the demand is driving airfares up by 15-20 per cent on popular sectors and hoteliers have also raised their rates by 20-30 per cent during peak travel periods. Consequently, all inclusive holiday packages have turned into an economical choice for tourists.
