Trump threatens further 50% tariff from April 9 if China doesn't drop hike

President Donald Trump on Monday threatened vast additional taxes on items from China if they did not withdraw a retaliation plan, including that Washington could begin negotiating with different nations if they wished.
Trump's Truth Social post said, "The United States will charge an ADDITIONAL 50 percent on China, starting April 9th, if China does not remove their 34 percent increase above and beyond their already long term vicious & horrible Trade Practices by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025."
Last week, Trump announced yet another big tariff increase on goods from the second biggest economy in the world, and, in response, Beijing announced countermeasures of its own.
Wednesday sees the imposition of a new 34 percent tax on products from the country, raising this year's total added rate to 54 percent. Trump's new threat obviously has the potential to complicate that calculation.
Beijing's answer included sending a raft of export controls on rare earth elements and stacking a planned 34 percent tax on US Goods on top of 100 billion dollars' worth of existing Chinese levies -- set to kick in April 10.
On social media Monday, Trump blasted Beijing's economic practices, calling its "non-monetary tariffs" and "illegal subsidization of companies" an insult.
He said: "All discussions with China about its request to meet with us will be canceled."
However, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, "negotiations with other countries, that have also requested meetings, will start happening right away."
