Saudia's Air Taxis: Pilgrim Mobility Revolution

Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) is set to introduce air taxis to facilitate the transportation of Haj and Umrah pilgrims between King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and hotels in Makkah. As one of the pioneers in the Mena region to invest in sustainable air mobility, Saudia has expressed its intent to purchase 100 all-electric Lilium Jets, a type of German electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
Abdullah Al Shahrani, the director of corporate communications and spokesman for the Saudia Group, has stated that the airline is gearing up to implement air taxis as a novel mode of transportation during the Haj season. These flying taxis are designed to accommodate four to six passengers, offering the potential to reduce flight times, with a maximum distance coverage of 250 km. The Lilium Jet features a unique cabin design that provides various options for seat arrangements.
The Saudia Group has entered into a contract to procure 100 Lilium jets, which will operate between Jeddah airport and airstrips near Makkah hotels situated close to the Grand Mosque and other sacred locations, as reported by local media. The Lilium Jet, being fully electric, boasts zero operating emissions, promoting sustainable and efficient travel. This move aligns with Saudia's commitment to contributing to the country's development strategy for sustainable air mobility.
The airline is also poised to assist Lilium in navigating the necessary regulatory approval processes within Saudi Arabia. This support includes facilitating the certification of the Lilium Jet and obtaining any other essential regulatory approvals. As the national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, Saudia currently serves an extensive network of over 100 domestic and international destinations, known for its world-renowned service and hospitality.
