Rarest cars, watches sold for Dh62 million; 3 supercars went for over Dh10 million each
RM Sotheby’s inaugural auction in Dubai proved to be a resounding success, with rare cars and watches fetching a staggering total of $17 million (Dh62 million). Among the highlights were three supercars that each sold for over Dh10 million, showcasing the growing appetite for luxury collectibles in the region.
The star of the auction was the 2016 Koenigsegg Agera RSR, one of only three in existence, which commanded an impressive $3.38 million (Dh12.4 million). Powered by a formidable 5.0 V-8 engine producing 1,160 horsepower, this supercar had covered a mere 993 kilometers, adding to its allure for collectors.
Following closely behind was the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss, fetching $3.211 million (Dh11.784 million). This sale marked another world-record auction price for the model, reflecting its rarity and desirability among enthusiasts. Rounding off the top three sellers was the 2023 Aston Martin Valkyrie Coupé, purchased for $3.07 million (Dh11.266 million). As the most potent Aston Martin ever produced, it captivated buyers with its cutting-edge design and performance.
Dubai's status as a premier destination for collectors of luxury items has made it a hotspot for prestigious auctions. The city's appeal as a hub for arts, supercars, watches, and other high-end goods has attracted auction houses seeking to capitalize on the region's affluent clientele.
Peter Wallman, chairman of RM Sotheby’s UK and EMEA, expressed satisfaction with the auction's success, highlighting the growing passion for collector cars in the region. He emphasized the appeal of acquiring rare vehicles in a live auction setting, supported by a burgeoning calendar of related events.
The top ten sales at the Dubai auction further underscored the diversity and exclusivity of the offerings. Notable entries included the 2017 Lamborghini Centenario LP770-4 Coupé, which sold for $2.142 million (Dh7.86 million), and the 2022 Ferrari 812 Competizione, securing $1.467 million (Dh5.383 million) and surpassing its pre-sale estimate.
In addition to the impressive array of cars, the auction also featured a selection of rare watches. Among them, the Rolex Daytona UAE stole the spotlight, fetching an astounding $300,000 (Dh1.1 million). Crafted around 1978, this timepiece bears the UAE coat of arms and the Arabic signature of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, underscoring its historical significance and appeal to collectors.
Katia Nounou Boueiz, senior director and head of Sotheby’s UAE, highlighted the inclusion of ten watches in the inaugural Dubai auction, further diversifying the offerings and catering to a wider range of collectors.
Overall, RM Sotheby’s inaugural Dubai auction achieved remarkable success, with 88.9 percent of all lots sold, grossing a total of $17.381 million (Dh63.788 million). The event not only showcased the growing appetite for luxury collectibles in the region but also reinforced Dubai's position as a leading destination for high-profile auctions.
