Ramadan in UAE: Fujairah Police step up crackdown on sudden lane swerving

The police department in Fujairah launched an intensified crackdown on dangerous driving habits during Ramadan by specifically targeting sudden swerving which stands as a major reason for road incidents in the UAE.

Fujairah Police issued a warning that drivers who engage in reckless driving will receive a Dh1,000 penalty and four demerit points according to Article 29 of UAE’s Federal Traffic Law.

Authorities in Fujairah stated that while sudden swerving leads to no vehicle impoundments initially, persistent offenders will encounter harsher consequences.

The Fujairah Police Traffic and Patrols Department warned drivers that unexpected lane changes due to driver distraction or a lack of signaling substantially raise accident risks during busy traffic periods.

The Ministry of Interior reported that the UAE saw 384 road fatalities last year which represents a 9 per cent increase from 352 deaths in 2023.

The death count increased by 12 per cent which means there were 41 additional fatalities when compared to the 343 deaths from 2022. The deaths and injuries were caused by these top five violations: The main causes of road accidents included distracted driving along with tailgating and sudden deviation from lanes due to negligence or inattention together with a failure to maintain proper lane discipline.

Crucial campaign 

Fujairah Police stress the essential need for the campaign against sudden lane changes during the month of Ramadan. The combination of driver fatigue alongside dehydration and rushed actions during this period results in more road accidents. The hours before iftar mark the highest accident rates because motorists tend to drive faster to return home which leads to more sudden lane changes and vehicle control loss.

Traffic violations show a marked increase during Ramadan because of driver fatigue and impatience. The Fujairah Police spokesperson emphasized that following traffic regulations and avoiding abrupt lane changes can protect lives.
