Ramadan begins in UAE: Will Eid break be 3 or 4 days?
While the faithful take their fast from February 18 and reverberate into the rhythm of Ramadan 2026, there is an unusual calm that is pervading, a subtle change in routine but a growing excitement about what lies at the end of month.
With 29-30 days to go, the country is getting into the spiritual tempo of Ramadan and quietly looking forward to a probably long Eid Al Fitr holiday — which many are eagerly waiting for already.
The country will celebrate Eid Al Fitr with a three-day holiday. As per the full-year UAE public holiday list, the break will be from Shawwal 1 to 3. In 2026, the non-movable Islamic holiday would be Friday through Sunday March 20-22.
The 4-day Eid Al Fitr holiday is still likely.
But the official committees could confirm, only after sighting of Shawwal crescent moon on 29th day of Ramadan falling on March 18, whether Ruet-e-Hilal will be held or not.
So, if the Shawwal crescent is seen on March 18, that means March 19 will be announced as Eid Al Fitr. That would mean residents in the UAE would get a four-day holiday that starts on March 19, with Sunday being the official weekend in the Emirates.
If the crescent moon is not seen on March 18, Ramadan will be for 30 days and Eid will start on Friday, March 20 leaving a three‑day holiday to residents.
But with wise scheduling, residents can still make the most of this abbreviated time off. By taking annual leave from Monday to Thursday March 16-19, it is possible to enjoy 9 all nine days including weekends and the Eid holidays, from Saturday March 14 until Sunday March 22.
For the country that is celebrating the start of this holy month that will bring days of fasting, contemplation and unity, many are already eagerly watching for those celebratory days at its end.
Already tailors are refusing new orders for outfits for Eid, shops are stocking up and there are precursors to celebration coursing through neighborhoods long before the first crescent of Shawwal is sighted.
