Tunnel Excavation Project To Commence

According to the Dubai Municipality on Tuesday, the excavation for the Deep Tunnel Storm Water System for Airport City-Expo 2020 will commence later this year in December.
This project aims at offering a long-term solution for rainwater drainage for the next 100 years. It is slated to be set up inDubai's Tunnel Project Al Maktoum Airport Area and the urban complexes in the vicinity.
This project was led by Dawood Abdul Rahman Al Hajiri, who is the director-general of Dubai Municipality, They visited the Chinese city of Guangzhou to understand the different stages of manufacturing and to also to learn about how to manufacture the digging machine.
The aforementioned announcement was made after a Dubai-led delegation visited China to study the manufacturing of the custom-made digging machine which will be used right throughout the projects.
“The drilling will be done in two types of soil — the weak rocky soil and clay soil with an average depth of 42 metres. The tunnel with a diameter of 10 metres will consist of eight concrete segments per ring, each 35cm thick. There will be two segment types — 1.6m and 2m wide and each piece will be weighing seven tonnes. These pieces will be fixed by iron pegs and sealed with epoxy (resin),” said Al Hajiri.
Additionally, Dubai will also be acquiring two large Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) in order to drill deep tunnels for the projects. These machines will be the largest in the region to be used to digging tunnels and transporting stormwater.
According to Al Hajiri, manufacturing and installation of one single device will take around 364,000 man hours.
Once the tunnel is finished, the internal diameter will measure 10 metres. The cutting diameter of one TBM will be 11.05 metres and the average 11.05 metres.
