Dubai Takes Bold Step: Bans Single-Use Plastic with Dh2,000 Fines
Dubai has implemented a ban on single-use plastic, effective from January 1, 2024, with fines up to Dh2,000 for violations. This move aligns with the UAE government's announcement in January 2023 about a nationwide ban on single-use plastic from 2024. The primary goal is to protect the environment, reduce plastic consumption, and regulate usage at the federal level.
The federal government introduced a tariff of 25 fils (Dh0.25) on consumers utilizing single-use plastic bags, encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives. Many retailers already applied this tariff before its official implementation, with Dubai implementing it on July 1. Other emirates, including Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain, and Ajman, banned single-use plastics from January 1, 2023, while Ras Al Khaimah followed suit from January 1, 2024.
In Abu Dhabi, a comprehensive ban on single-use plastic was enacted on June 1, 2022, accompanied by a ban on Styrofoam products from January 1, 2024. According to the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, the bans resulted in saving 450,000 single-use plastic bags daily during the first year.
Key Details of the Ban:
