Dubai: Man sentenced to jail for swindling doctor out of Dh600,000, embezzling funds

A European man, age 48, has been sentenced to one month’s jail time in absentia and fined Dh600,000 after being convicted of embezzling money from an Arab medical practitioner doctor under the guise of a medical partnership by the Dubai Misdemeanors Court.
The venerated court in Dubai has also ordered him to be deported after serving his sentence.
This case goes back to May last year when the doctor filed an official complaint accusing the defendant of defrauding her out of Dh600,000. In her testimony, she claimed that the man approached her with a proposal to partner with her in establishing a multi-specialty medical center in Dubai with an approximate total investment of Dh7 million and claimed that there were other partners which is why he asked her to contribute Dh1 million towards the venture.
As part of the agreement, he claimed that he would work with other partners and asked her to contribute $1 million. She claimed to have met the defendant during a medical exhibit and sent him Dh400,000 as an initial payment and then another 200,000 which she sent to his personal bank account.
Upon receiving the funds, the defendant did not proceed with the project in plans that were initially set. It is alleged that he refused to move forward with the partnership or refund the money, thereby prompting the victim to take the necessary steps approaching the authorities with a formal complaint.
The court determined that the defendant received the money in a trust relationship and misappropriated it to benefit himself, which in meaning is embezzlement.
