Dubai is pioneering a groundbreaking project aimed at using a single biometric system for the entire passenger journey, covering check-in, immigration, and boarding the aircraft. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) officials announced that Dubai International Airport would adopt biometric technology to identify passengers based on their unique physical or behavioral characteristics.

This innovative approach will not only enhance passenger clearance but also eliminate the need for traditional immigration counters, ensuring a seamless and efficient experience for travelers.

Major General Obaid bin Suroor, deputy director-general of GDRFA, explained, "We have been working on this one biometric project for two years. The idea is to make the passenger journey faster, easier, and seamless using a single biometric system. For instance, passengers checking in will use the same biometric data for immigration, lounge access, and boarding the aircraft. We call it a smart journey. In the future, we may not see the classic counters we are familiar with."

Speaking on the sidelines of a press conference about the upcoming International Conference on Policymaking: The Future of Ports, Major General Talal Al Shangeti, assistant director-general of the Airport Passport Sector at GDRFA, emphasized the importance of iris and facial biometrics in creating a seamless passenger journey, encompassing check-in, immigration, security, and final boarding.

During the January-June period, more than 42 million passengers, including transit travelers, used airports and immigration borders, with 37 percent utilizing smart gates. The goal is to increase this figure to 80 percent within the next few years, with Dubai International Airport aiming for a full deployment of biometric technology.

Currently, there are 120 operational smart gates at Dubai International, with plans to expand to 150 by the end of the year or early next year.
