K-pop sensation Blackpink, the South Korean girl group, received honorary MBEs (Members of the Order of the British Empire) from King Charles III for their notable work as environmental advocates. The four members of Blackpink—Rosé, Jennie, Jisoo, and Lisa—were honoured at Buckingham Palace in a ceremony attended by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee during their state visit to Britain.

The honorary MBEs were awarded to Blackpink in recognition of their role as advocates for the COP26 climate summit in 2021. The palace noted that through their involvement, the band encouraged millions of young people to engage with the global UN climate change conference held in Glasgow, focusing on the critical issue of climate action. The MBEs were presented at an Investiture ceremony in the 1844 Room at Buckingham Palace.

During the ceremony, King Charles jokingly remarked to the band, "It's amazing you're still talking to each other after all these years. I hope I shall be able to see you perform live at some point." The quartet engaged in conversation, laughter, and photo opportunities with the British monarch as he presented them with the medals.

Blackpink, often referred to as the first couple of South Korea, returned to Buckingham Palace for the MBE ceremony shortly after attending a state banquet held at the palace for President Yoon and First Lady Kim the previous night.

The K-pop group, known for its massive global fanbase, has been active in environmental advocacy and climate change awareness. In 2021, Blackpink released a series of videos aimed at encouraging young people to learn more about climate change, resulting in increased engagement with the COP26 summit by young audiences.

King Charles III, a lifelong environmentalist, spoke at COP26 and is scheduled to deliver a speech at the opening of the COP28 climate conference in the UAE starting next week. Blackpink's involvement in environmental causes aligns with their appointment as ambassadors for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres following their roles at COP26.

Since their debut in 2016, Blackpink has become one of the most successful girl groups globally, setting records such as becoming the most subscribed-to music artists on YouTube. Their influence extends beyond music, reaching into the realms of fashion, beauty, and activism, making them cultural icons with a significant impact on global youth culture.
