Dubai Creek shortlisted by UNESCO for World Heritage Sites

Dubai Creek
The Dubai Creek has been one of the most iconic places in the emirate.

Dubai Creek, the iconic waterway which flows between Bur Dubai and Deira, has been included as one of the 30 nominees for UNESCO’s famous World Heritage Sites list.

The waterway is one of the 30 locations which have been shortlisted from all over the world. The other entries are: the Ancient City of Qalhat in Oman, the Naumburg Cathedral in Germany, Caliphate City of Mediha Azahara in Spain, among others.

A number of sites are set to be preserved and protected with the World Heritage Committee currently deliberating on the order of precedence which might well be because of their cultural or physical significance.

If history is to be believed, the creek was a demarcation between the two main sections of the cities– Deira and Bur Debai.

It has to be mentioned here that the Bani Yas’ tribe members first settles along the Bur Dubai creek way back in the 19th century. They were the tribe responsible for the establishment of the Al Maktoum dynasty in the city.

Dubai Creek which is also famously known as Khor Dubai has been a pivotal point in the economic and social development of the emirate.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, had once famously proclaimed: "The Creek is the very heart and soul of Dubai – its raison d’etre. Such has always been the case with Dubai and its Creek, which has shaped the city for over 100 years.”

A number of developmental work which has seen many mega projects take place in and around this iconic waterway. The water flows into the Dubai Canal where the world’s tallest tower is currently being constructed.

The 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee is slated to be held from June 24 to July 4, 2018.
