Wagtail chicks hatch a historic first in Dubai
In a momentous event for bird enthusiasts, Dubai's Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve witnesses the historic breeding of Black-headed Yellow Wagtails. Dr. Reza Khan, a veteran wildlife expert, confirms this significant milestone, attributing it to Dubai's commitment to creating conducive habitats. The reserve's diverse wetland attracts various avian species, with the Wagtails now finding a home in the lush grass fields nurtured by treated sewage water. Dr. Khan's observations reveal a shift in the Wagtails' behavior, transitioning from transient visitors to settled breeders. Despite facing challenges like heavy rains flooding their nests, the Wagtails persevered, with two pairs successfully raising five healthy chicks by June. This achievement underscores the UAE's conservation efforts, welcoming millions of migratory birds annually and significantly expanding its bird species checklist.
