As Dubai welcomed the dawn of 2024 with exuberance, a cohort of unsung heroes embarked on a mission to maintain the city's renowned cleanliness even on a public holiday. While the rest of Dubai reveled in the festivities, these unseen champions, comprising street cleaners from Dubai Municipality and private entities, tirelessly worked to keep the city spotless.

One such hero is Ahmed Jamal, a Bangladeshi expatriate with two decades of experience cleaning Dubai's streets. For him, the New Year's Day routine is not just a job; it's a commitment to preserving the pristine appearance of the streets he diligently maintains. Starting at 9 am, Jamal tackled a 5-kilometer stretch in Deira, particularly around the 'fish roundabout.' By noon, he had already cleared 40% of his designated area, demonstrating the dedication that has characterized his two decades of service.

Jamal's sentiments reflect a routine that goes beyond professional obligations. Witnessing his work make a tangible difference in the cleanliness of the streets serves as motivation. His commitment is such that he finds disappointment in seeing the streets he cleans in anything but a pristine state. His efforts over the years have not only contributed to Dubai's cleanliness but have also supported significant personal milestones, including the marriage of one of his daughters, with similar plans for two more.

Mohammed Akmal, another expatriate, echoed a similar sentiment about his 12-year commitment to keeping the streets of Satwa clean. For him, every day is an opportunity to contribute to the city's cleanliness, and New Year's Day is no exception. Akmal sees his role as rectifying the inadvertent mistakes of celebrants who may litter during moments of joy and revelry.

Remarkably, Akmal views his cleaning duties as a health benefit. Walking nearly 10 kilometers daily, his job becomes a form of exercise, complemented by the enjoyment of his favorite tunes through headphones. With three breaks scheduled for tea, lunch, and a noon rest, Akmal's routine reflects not just a commitment to cleanliness but a holistic approach to personal well-being.

Meanwhile, in the hills of Hatta, Shawkath Ali, a Pakistani expat, engages in a unique form of cleanup combined with his passion for hiking. Anticipating New Year's celebrations in the hills, Ali distributed garbage bags to revelers to ensure responsible disposal of their waste. The proactive measure paid off, as the celebrants themselves contributed to maintaining the cleanliness of the area, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility.

Even corporate entities took note of the diligent efforts of their cleaning staff. Emaar Developers shared a video on social media showcasing the post-celebration cleanup in Downtown Dubai. The video not only highlighted the dedicated cleaners swiftly restoring the area but also expressed gratitude for their commitment and efficiency.

In essence, these unsung heroes play a pivotal role in upholding Dubai's reputation as one of the cleanest cities globally. Their unwavering commitment on New Year's Day reflects not just a job but a shared responsibility to keep the city gleaming and inviting for residents and visitors alike.
